Grape Ape THCa Strain Goes Deep Purple

Featured image for “Grape Ape THCa Strain Goes Deep Purple”

Grape Ape has always been known for its purple buds, but our latest batch takes that reputation a little further. The grower told us this harvest developed the deepest purple coloring of any Grape Ape run in their program. The Grape Ape THCa strain brings together sweet grape, dark berries, and earthy Skunk notes in dense, resin-covered flower. Its Mendocino Purps, Skunk, and Afghani genetics have made it a familiar name among fans of classic California indicas. Our current batch comes from a no-till living soil grow and tests at 30% THCa. The rich purple coloring invites a closer look, especially if you enjoy flower with old-school genetics. Explore our Grape Ape THCa flower.

Why Is Our Grape Ape So Purple?

Purple cannabis gets its color from pigments. These compounds occur naturally in many plants, including blueberries, grapes, and purple cabbage. Cannabis plants can develop purple coloring when their genetics allow them to produce and accumulate these pigments. Growing conditions can influence how strongly the color appears.

Grape Ape has a long history of producing dark purple flowers. Its Mendocino Purps ancestry is closely tied to that trait, although the final color can vary between plants and harvests. Our grower noticed something unusual during the final week of flowering. The purple coloring developed more fully than it had in previous Grape Ape runs, creating the darkest batch they’ve grown so far. It’s also our #7 Reviewer’s Pick!

Grower’s Note:

The grower reports that this Grape Ape developed its deep purple coloring without cold treatment. The plants completed their normal flowering cycle in no-till living soil, with the color becoming especially pronounced during the final week. Natural temperature changes may have contributed to the color development, although we can’t establish the exact cause from appearance alone. The finished buds show how strongly this particular Grape Ape selection can express its purple genetics under the farm’s growing conditions.

The Grape Ape THCa Strain Has Three Classic Parents

Grape Ape is commonly associated with Apothecary Genetics and a three-way cross of Mendocino Purps, Skunk, and Afghani. The strain became known during California’s medical cannabis era and remains a recognizable name among older purple cultivars. Each parent brings a different set of characteristics to the family tree.

Mendocino Purps Brings the Grape

Mendocino Purps has roots in Northern California’s cannabis-growing history. It’s closely associated with purple coloring and rich fruit notes. Those characteristics help explain Grape Ape’s dark appearance and its familiar grape-and-berry profile. The Mendocino connection also places Grape Ape in California’s purple-strain tradition, which developed long before today’s candy-heavy hybrids became common.

Skunk Adds an Earthy Edge

Skunk genetics have influenced cannabis breeding for decades. The family is known for its pungent, earthy character and its role in many modern crosses. In Grape Ape, the Skunk influence adds depth to the sweet fruit profile. You may notice a slightly herbal or musky quality when you break apart the buds. If you enjoy that older style of flower, our Skunk #1 strain guide explores the genetics that helped shape so many later cultivars.

Afghani Contributes Dense, Resinous Flower

Afghani genetics have a long history of producing compact plants with dense, resinous buds. Grape Ape carries those familiar structural characteristics, with tightly formed flowers and visible trichome coverage. We’ve also explored this genetic background in our Afghani strain guide, which looks at the landrace heritage behind many classic indica strains.

What Can You Expect From Grape Ape?

Grape Ape has a long history as a relaxing pure indica. Many people choose it for quiet evenings, when they can settle in and take their time. Our current batch tests at 30% THCa, so keep your tolerance in mind. If you’re new to high-potency flower, start with a small amount, see how you feel, then use more. Everyone responds to cannabis differently. Your experience can depend on your tolerance, the amount you use, and the setting.

Grape Ape THCa Strain FAQs

Will Every Grape Ape Batch Look This Purple?

Not always. Color can vary from one harvest to the next, even when the grower uses the same strain. Genetics and growing conditions both play a role. Our grower reports that this is their deepest purple Grape Ape batch so far.

Does Darker Purple Flower Have More THCa?

No. Purple coloring comes from plant pigments. You can’t judge a flower’s THCa level by its color. Check the test results for the batch you’re buying.

Is Grape Ape Related to Zkittlez?

Yes. Grape Ape is commonly listed as one of the strains used to create Zkittlez, also known as The Original Z. If you enjoy the sweet fruit notes in Zkittlez, Grape Ape lets you explore an older part of its family tree.

Why Does Grape Ape Sometimes Have Green Buds?

Grape Ape can produce both green and purple flower. The amount of purple depends on the plant’s genetics and growing conditions. A greener batch can still be genuine Grape Ape, so color alone isn’t a reliable way to identify the strain.

Is Grape Ape the Same as Grape Gas?

No. Grape Ape is an older indica known for its sweet grape and earthy profile. Grape Gas is a separate hybrid with a stronger fuel character. If you prefer fruit flavors with less gas, Grape Ape may be more your style.
